Research question: Investigation into how Dutch higher education institutions can tailor their student intake procedure to help students choose their subject and level of study better and prevent unnecessary switching and dropout. Method: With a field experiment at the Economics faculty of the UvA we test the effectiveness of i) providing objective statistics about success rates conditional on prior exam grades and speed of registration; ii) warning students who seem unlikely to be successful; iii) compulsory intake interviews with an active student; iv) compulsory introduction day with classes and tutorials at the university. Status: Batch i and ii of the experiment have been run and the first data is ready for analysis (first results December 2009). Batch iii and iv will follow in May-September 2010. The final results should be available December 2010.
